Fire breaks out at the Perkins Restaurant in Brooklyn on Tiedeman Road Monday night.  Fortunately no one was hurt, but employees are concerned about their jobs as the restaurant will now be closed until further notice.  Click here for the whole story.

Perkins recently became a part of my weekend routine.  On Sunday morning, I would stop in on the way to church with my father.  I tried cooking breakfast on my own previously, but I think he got tired of just scrambled eggs and bacon, and he wanted the bacon to be crisp.  Going to Perkins on Sunday morning was the viable solution, where we had a chance to sit down and share a meal, and were always greeted by the friendly staff.

There were some dishes I came to enjoy there.  Dad usually gets the Belgian Waffle Platter, and I would order a pancake platter, but last time I had the Lemon Pie Blueberry Pancake Platter.  Sometimes I would change up with the Big Country Smasher, loaded with potatoes, vegetables, sausage and scrambled eggs.  We always enjoyed Sunday breakfast at Perkins, so this coming weekend will be a challenge.

As mentioned in the story brought by Fox 8’s Maia Belay, the cause of the fire was a lit cigarette that landed on some mulch outside the front of the restaurant.  The careless act has many of us shaking our heads.  How could something like that happen with talk about forest fires starting the same way?  Maybe it will help to bring back Smokey Bear to remind us that only we can prevent forest fires.  Check out the website here.

Thankfully, the restaurant had some damage, but the fire was contained so that the restaurant could reopen again.  In time, we shall see if it does, and what changes may happen to help everyone stay safe, in case such an incident happens again.   Hopefully it won’t happen for a long time.  My big challenge this weekend will be how to get breakfast in order, and tell Dad we can’t eat at Perkins this weekend; but we look forward to returning there soon, and seeing the same friendly faces we’re used to seeing every week.

Scarlett Johansson explodes on the screen in Lucy.  She stars as Lucy, a young lady who gets pulled into a web of smuggling that later gives her the ability to use her mind to turn the tables on her captors and do some amazing things.

After being caught in some bad business, she is taken prisoner by a group of drug smugglers who surgically insert bags of an experimental drug in people they send to different parts of the world, for collection and profit.  In a violent incident that breaks the bag inside Lucy, the drug takes effect, and enables her to escape, and seek out the counsel of Professor Samuel Norman – played by Morgan Freeman – in whose research she takes interest in.  The more she uses of her brain, the more amazing things she is able to do, and the more she needs the remaining bags of the substance to stay alive.  In amazing ways, she finds the other bags of “merchandise,” demonstrates her power to Professor Norman and his colleagues, thwarts the efforts of those pursuing her and does more of the unbelievable.

The film is Rated R for strong violence, disturbing images and sexuality, so don’t leave your kids to watch it alone.  Once you get past the violence in the beginning, fasten your seat belts for the thrill ride to follow.  Lucy released in theaters in 2014, and is now available on DVD, may be found on Netflix and Hulu, seen on cable, rented from Redbox or even borrowed from your local library.   Lucy is a sure pic for fans of the femme fatale with an ever-evolving mind.

Voice your choice!  Some may have never seen it coming, when we started out with several candidates on either side.  The debates revved up, and candidates were bowing out left and right.  On the Democratic side, it eventually came down to Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.  On the Republican side, candidates tried not to let it happen, but Donald Trump took the lead in shark-like fashion, surprisingly garnering support from his rivals as they left.

The Republican side seemed incredibly divided.  Trump’s talk was the most divisive, and somehow he was the engine that could when others thought he could not.  The competition narrowed down even more.  Governor John Kasich seemed to be the last man standing against Donald Trump, but by the time of the convention, Donald Trump accepted the nomination as the presidential candidate for the Republican Party.

The Democratic Convention ended in similar fashion.  Bernie Sanders pledged his support to Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential candidate.  The race narrowed down between the two parties, now having their representative candidates duking it out in campaigns and debates.

The race is nearing the end.  We have choices to make, and the choices will determine the future of our nation for at least the next four years.  Rivals that once pledged support for Donald Trump are now withdrawing, the campaign ads are getting more prevalent, and soon Election Day will sneak up on us again – in the next two weeks!  As I realized looking at the calendar this morning, it isn’t next Tuesday, but the Tuesday after next.  Have you found some interesting facts to back your choice for the next president?  Keep digging, and choose carefully.  The outcome of this election will make history – either the first female President of the United States, or the Donald may have this country Trumped.
