Ted Cruz refusing to back Trump

Anyone who followed the debates among the Republican candidates recalls the banter between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, and somehow Trump came out ahead.  When Senator Ted Cruz spoke at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland on Wednesday night, he finished by encouraging delegates to vote their conscience.  There were many boos in response from Trump’s supporters, and others in the party accused the former rival of not keeping his promise.  This could be long remembered as Cruz’s Last Stand.  Read the whole story here.

How did we reach this point?  How is Donald Trump considered the Republican candidate for the presidential election?  Have they really considered everything he says about what he talks about?  What can be so appealing here?  These are questions yet to be answered by supporters with something more than vague and meaningless rhetoric.

Efforts to create unity in the party aren’t bad, but is it worth it to be unified under a man who clearly airs disdain for diverse cultures, wanting to ban foreigners, bash women, and overall adds fuel to the racial fires we’ve tried to put out for years?

By the way, is Governor John Kasich still in the running?  He hasn’t pledged to support Trump, either, and it doesn’t seem like he’s conceded his campaign yet.  Some party opinion polls seemed to prefer him over Trump, but how come he hasn’t been nominated?  As Trump has shown himself to be a shark, somehow he gained the support of others who once campaigned against him – like Governor Chris Christie, Dr. Ben Carson, and now Governor Mike Pence as his running mate for Vice President to name a few.

As we near another presidential election, with President Barack Obama finishing two consecutive terms, having made history as the first African-American president, having received minimal cooperation and unprecedented disrespect, what could be in store for Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic candidate?  Bernie Sanders, her longstanding rival, recently pledged his support for her campaign.  The race is narrowing, but it may be tough to call between these two.  As Mr. Cruz said, I hope you will be encouraged to vote your conscience, and don’t be so duped to just follow the crowd, because sometimes even the crowd can be wrong.
